Ayurveda History
The ancient art of medicine called Ayurveda dates back to almost 5000 years. It is a system of healing that originated in India during the Vedic age, said to have been passed down from the gods to the sages, and eventually to humankind. Ayurvedic medicine is based on holistic healing, the essence of which is harmony between the energies of the mind, body and spirit. Ayurveda defines three fundamental body types in general physiology - Vata, Pitta and Kapha. Collectively called the Doshas, these form the basis of Ayurvedic tradition and are the forces or principles of nature that determine our physical, mental and emotional attributes. A combination of the three Doshas forms the Prakriti, or natural characteristics of a person. Each individual inherits a distinct mix of the three energies and an imbalance in these energy levels is what is believed to cause health problems.
