Obesity Management in Ayurveda
Obesity is a metabolic disorder which is characterised by excess accumulation of body fat which gets deposited in the numerous body channels. Obesity is described in Ayurveda as Medoroga or Sthoulya Roga.
What Causes Obesity?
The most important causative factor of Obesity is incorrect Life Style and dietary choices. Irregular food habits, lack of physical activities, daytime sleep and intake of Kapha aggravating food such as sweet, salty and oil leads to Obesity.
Pathogenesis
Due to causative factors as mentioned earlier, the digestive fire will get an imbalance and hence lead to the formation of AMA (Bio Toxins). This AMA will hamper the metabolic activities, thereby the creation of more Medodbatu or fatty tissues. This process badly affects the formation of furthermost tissues such as Asthi (bone).Symptoms

Line of Management in Ayurveda
Obesity can be managed by two methods which are Shodhana Chikitsa and Shamana Chikitsa.
Shodhana treatment for Obesity involves complete detoxification of the body by panchakarma therapies such as Vamana (Theraputic Emesis), Virechana (Theraputic Purgation) and Lekhana Vasti or medicated
Shamana treatment for Obesity includes.- Internal Ayurveda medicines.
- Langhana or Fasting
- Ama Pachana, which is using internal medications to bring back normal metabolism.
- Ruksha Udvartana Treatment (Dry powder massage).
Along with these treatments, Ayurveda strongly recommends a healthy lifestyle modification, diet changes and proper stress management.
Recommended Ayurvedic Diet
- Try to follow low fat and low-calorie diet.
- Consume protein-rich food.
- Avoid sweet, salty and fried food items.
- Steamed, boiled, and baked food are suitable for such health conditions.
- Avoid carbonated sugary drinks.
- Try including walnut, bitter gourd, drum sticks, barley, mung dal, gooseberry into your diet.
Lifestyle Modification
- Mild to moderate, regular exercise is advisable.
- Brisk walking is suitable for people with such health condition.
- Avoid a sedentary lifestyle.
- Avoid day nap. Adopt a healthy sleeping pattern.
- Completely avoid intake of alcohol and do not smoke.
- Regular practice of yoga is highly recommended.
