Carpal Tunnel Syndrome
Carpal tunnel syndrome is caused by median nerve compression characterised by pain, numbness and tingling sensation in the hand and arm. A Carpal tunnel is a narrow passage located at the palm side of your hand. The median nerve, which is responsible for the sensation and movements of the thumb and fingers, runs through this carpal tunnel. Hence the name is called Carpal Tunnel Syndrome.
What causes Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
Carpal tunnel syndrome is usually contributed by factors that cause compression on the median nerve. These factors include;
- Any trauma or injury of wrist joint
- Due to some underlying conditions such as rheumatoid arthritis, thyroid gland issues, pituitary gland issues.
- Nature of work (usage of vibratory hand tools)
Risk factors:
- Gender: More common in women
- obesity- Obesity can increase the risk of carpal tunnel syndrome
- Health conditions such as diabetes, arthritis
- As a side effect of some medications
- Due to the nature of work, people working in sewing, fishing, cleaning, and meatpacking are more prone to carpal tunnel syndrome
Symptoms of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:
- Numbness or tingling sensation on fingers, especially in the thumb, index and middle fingers
- Swelling over palm
- Pain usually more during night-time
- Radiating pain to arm and shoulder
- Weakness of hand
How to diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome?
- Typical symptoms and physical examination can diagnose carpal tunnel syndrome.
- Electrodiagnostic tests like Nerve conduction study
- Ultrasound imaging
Carpal tunnel syndrome: Ayurvedic View
Ayurveda explains vitiation of vata dosha is the reason behind carpal tunnel syndrome. Because of this, treatments will aim to bring back the vitiated vata dosha to its normalcy.
